Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Her regular work in theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. However, Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
